BEIJING, February 15 (TMTPOST) — Japanese video game giant Nintendo is not interested in getting into the metaverse sector for now, according to the company’s president.
Nintendo’s president Shuntaro Furukawa said in a recent Q&A session of the company’s fiscal report that Nintendo is not interested in investing in the metaverse for now because it does not align with the company’s strategy.
【English|Nintendo is Not Interested in the Metaverse for Now】"The metaverse has captured the attention of many companies around the world, and it has great potential," Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said. "When the concept of the metaverse is introduced in the media, games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons are sometimes brought up as examples. In that sense, the metaverse is of interest to us.”
"But at this point in time, there is no easy way to define specifically what kinds of surprises and enjoyment the metaverse can deliver to our consumers. As a company that provides entertainment, our main emphasis is on ways to deliver fresh surprises and fun to our consumers. We might consider something if we can find a way to convey a 'Nintendo approach' to the metaverse that many people can readily understand, but we do not think that is the situation at the present time," Shuntaro said, stating that the definition of the metaverse is still unclear to Nintendo.
It is worth noting that Nintendo's popular game title Animal Crossing is often considered an example of what the metaverse would look like.
Nintendo is not the first one to scrutinize the metaverse hype. Evernote’s CEO Phil Libin criticized Facebook’s parent company Meta after trying out the company’s first metaverse product.
"I had a very, very strong feeling that it would suck, but I went into it with as much hope as possible that I would be pleasantly surprised," Libin said in an interview with financial media Insider. According to Libin, Meta’s metaverse product was “only tolerable for a few minutes.” He concluded that Meta’s metaverse product was an uncreative idea that has been tried for many times over the past four decades.
